Chimney Sweep

DID YOU KNOW, a regularly used chimney should be swept AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR in order to reduce the risk of a chimney fire?

This helps to remove the soot, tar and creosote that forms when you burn wood and coal in your open fire or stove. It can also help your flue draw more effectively by making sure there is a clear passageway for the smoke produced during combustion to evacuate out of the top of your chimney.

Chimney sweeping should be a vital part of your home maintenance and will ensure your chimney is kept clean and clear of obstructions, minimising the likelihood of a chimney fire occurring.

VALE CHIMNEYS SWEEPS THE FOLLOWING FLUES:

  • Open fires
  • Wood-burning & multi-fuel stoves
  • Inglenook fireplaces
  • AGAs and Rayburns
  • Gas and Oil flues
  • Canal boat flues

We conduct a free smoke evacuation test with every sweep to make sure that your chimney has an adequate draw.

Vale Chimneys is accredited by the Institute of Chimney Sweeps and issues certification after every chimney sweep (in the event of a fire, some insurance companies require a copy of the certificate to prove that the chimney has been regularly maintained by a professionally trained sweep).

Our services are carried out in line with current Health and Safety regulations and adhere to Building Regulations document J.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CHIMNEY BE SWEPT?

BIRD NESTS

The Institute of Chimney Sweeps recommends chimneys using the following fuels should be swept:

  • Smokeless fuel – at least once a year
  • Bituminous coal – twice a year
  • Wood – twice a year when in use
  • Oil – once a year
  • Gas – once a year

If you are unsure how often your chimney should be swept, or you have any other concerns regarding the safety of your chimney/ stove, please contact Vale Chimneys for advice.

At Vale Chimneys, we often come across chimneys that have become blocked with bird nests. These must be removed carefully to ensure the flue draws safely and effectively.

If you suspect a bird nest in your chimney please contact Vale Chimneys as soon as possible. If the nest is left and the fire lit, the smoke cannot travel past the nest safely and may result in smoke travelling back down the chimney and filling the room with smoke, or even worse a chimney fire may start.

Vale Chimneys removes bird nests and can also fit cowls to prevent birds from nesting in the chimney.

Please visit the Bird Nest Removal section of our website for further information.
